Meet the Vibrating Wristband That Claims to Reduce Stress In Seconds

Life can be stressful. Whether it’s your job, money problems, relationship issues, or any other number of things that cause anxiety, calming yourself down when things get rough can be difficult.

But a brand called TouchPoints has come up with vibrating wristbands, which they claim will diffuse your stress in just 30 seconds.

The way they work is that you wear them as a pair—one on each wrist—and they reassign the brain’s response to stress.

“When people have stress, the first thing that engages is the body’s fight or flight mechanism,” Vicki Mayo, TouchPoints’ CEO and co-founder, told Mashable. “What TouchPoints do is they use a bilateral stimulation—so a vibration on either side of the body—that actually alters the body’s fight or flight response.”

Bilateral Alternating Stimulation Tactile (BLAST) has been used in several studies to treat stress disorders, where subjects were more relaxed under these conditions because it activates certain parts of the brain that recall pleasant memories and induce relaxation.

According to Mayo, the first thing the user will feel when they activate the wristband is relief in the body sensations associated with stress, like stomach aches, chest pains, or muscle tension. Then, your brain will go from fight or flight to thinking logically in seconds.

Mashable reports that 75 percent of Americans experience moderate to severe levels of stress. Chronic stress can lead to a weakened immune system, insomnia, high blood pressure, and even a heart attack or stroke. (You can find a list of other products that help you destress here.)

There are two versions of these wristbands—TouchPoints Basic and TouchPoints Original. You can order the basic version, which isn’t connected to a smartphone app and has three response speeds for $119, and the original version, which does connect to a smartphone app and offers six settings to optimize performance for $240.
